Women’s Unveiling in the 2011 Egyptian Uprising: Political Opportunities and Modesty Politics

Abstract Using the case of women’s unveiling during 2011 Egyptian uprising, I investigate how momentous political events have transformative impacts beyond overtly “political” sphere policies and institutions. trace choice to unveil among some women protesters their involvement in collective action show different mechanisms that led decision. Specifically, identify three pathways unveiling: shifts opportunities, innovations repertoires contention framing unveiling, exposure new mobilizing structures networks. The data for this project build upon original field research interview with who removed hijab uprising. article adds literature on gender contentious politics by demonstrating gendered effects opportunity choices around veiling.
